When I heard that her Dad had left their family without any financial support, my heart sunk. She was switching to a school far off the beaten track & was feeling sad to be separated from her friends. It didn't take me long to add this to the Nicaragua School initiative. Our project has allowed Hilce to remain at the private school she feels comfortable, alongside her friends (and a short walk from her neighbourhood.)

I have already promised her another year of school via our project--considering she has done well in her studies, and is thriving in the environment. We currently have enough funds to support our 600 children with school supplies, but could use $200-250 more dollars to ensure Hilce's education is paid for. Please make the difference: http://www.nicaraguaschoolproject.org/helpourcause.html

Also- I would be happy to connect anyone who supports Hilce in her educational journey. A pen-pal- someone to practice your spanish with. She even has facebook:) This is the real deal.

Thanks for your support. Muchas Gracias.

Happy Holidays.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 234px; height: 241px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ukOwzOdSdmE/TvDd3bGWqdI/AAAAAAAAALo/YvlYsnKaPAA/s320/holly7.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5688290273605888466" />
Wishing all our lovely supporters a wonderful holiday season!:)

This fall has been an active one for the Nicaragua School Project. We collaborated with students at Royal Roads University and held a small fundraiser in the cafeteria- and raised $400.00. It was fantastic to expose our project to more people--spreading our message of friendship, and that 100% of our funds go to our cause.

Our school supply project went great in September--all 600 children received their school supplies. We purchased art supplies for the preschoolers & necessary supplies for the teachers. We even had 500.00 to put back in the bank, which we will use for our upcoming school supply project in February. We still need about $1500 for the upcoming project-- so if you are looking for a last minute Xmas gift for the "person who has everything" or would like to donate in the new year, please make the difference:

http://www.nicaraguaschoolproject.org/contact.html
Just contact me as well so I can keep track of donations:)

I have updated the blog a few times this fall--so have a look! http://www.nicaraguaschoolproject.org (media page.) I am quite active on social media with the project- so jump on board if you're looking to become more involved.

Twitter: @Nicasmiles

I appreciate all your contributions and interest in our little project- which will be turning 4 years old this February 2012. For the last 4 years, our project “Nicaragua School Project” has demonstrated this over and over again. The traditional form of “thank-you” is never necessary; their genuine smiles sum it up for us, we have done our jobs.

Our project equips 600 children with necessary school supplies in El Pantanal, Nicaragua. We specialize in “lifting the burden off the parents” and giving children the opportunity to make the most of their educations. We have seen an increase in attendance at our two schools over the last four years—Nicaragua School Project is making small, but important waves.

A little goes a long way. 100% of funds go directly to the project; we are 100% volunteer.
http://www.nicaraguaschoolproject.org

Pencils for Smiles!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-b58cbwtqwik/TsmqCpKDZ4I/AAAAAAAAALQ/N1fFKD5tY9E/s320/Smiling%2Bis%2Bthe%2Binternational.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5677255767661700994" />
Pencils will be given as gratitude to those who donate to the Nicaragua School Project. Luckily, my wonderful friend, Dorothy, volunteered to take on the big responsibility this August. I know that with Dorothy’s help, the project will go great!

Dorothy is a teacher from Northern California; she decided to move to Granada, Nicaragua for six months to soak up the culture and language. She has been a great help at Casa Xalteva—teaching English classes to children and teenagers who attend the before and after school program. Dorothy worked as a teacher in juvenile hall in Northern California, thus; she lends this expertise and sense of patience to the Nicaraguan kids that she works with.

She has grown a deep love for Nicaragua and was excited to offer her assistance to our project this coming August. Dorothy will work with Juan Carlos and Andres to make sure all 600 students receive their proper school supply packets. I imagine the humorous chemistry between all three of these people will make it a delightful experience!

We have almost met our donation goal—but are still in need of a little bit more. I’m there to fulfill the needs of my non-profit project; a project that raises money to support 600 Nicaraguan school children. Along the way, I always manage to pick up my fair share of local and foreign friends. This year has been no exception.

I met a girl named Sara Deckert from the USA; she was studying Spanish at Casa Xalteva for several months. A lovely blonde haired, blue eyed girl—the Nicaraguans told me her Spanish was rather impressive. After some time, we had coffee at my favorite cafe in Granada, and we got to know each other. She, like me, was in love with Spanish. Her passion for learning every detail, every expression, and every Spanish joke gave her purpose; driving her to venture off abroad to learn it more in depth.

She also got to know my friend Dorothy who, like Sara, was living in Granada long term in order to pick up on the language and culture of Nicaragua. After I went back to Canada, Dorothy and Sara continued to spend time together—reflecting on the ups and downs of adapting to another culture. We had all planned to meet up together the next year in Granada, a reunion of sorts.

Sara is proof that taking the plunge and following your passion is a must. A few weeks after returning home from Nicaragua, she was fatally struck by a drunk driver. I can’t begin to understand the pain and extreme sadness that her family is feeling. All I know, and all I can offer, is that Sara finished her life doing something she loved—soaking up all those beautiful Spanish sounds, expanding her vocabulary. I know it made her truly happy. Rest in peace, Sara.

August School Supply!!

600 children are waiting in the school yards of El Pantanal. They hope we return to them with a fresh batch of hand made school packs--complete with notebooks, pens, pencils, erasers, and pencil sharpeners--this coming August.

A school pack costs about $5 to $6 dollars. Can you spare a few dollars for our cause? http://www.nicaraguaschoolproject.org/contact.html

I realize that the world is on fire right now; there are so many causes to support--the tornadoes of the south, the Japanese earthquake, and the floods plaguing the planet.... If you are still able to help our cause, I truly appreciate it (and so do our Nicaraguans friends.) The communication of this organization is different from other causes since our philosophy is of frienship; the aim is never to annoy or plea with donors for help... If you can help--it's most appreciated. I also realize that not everyone is in the financial situation to donate. Perhaps, having this type of philosophy isn't the most lucrative, but it has always worked for us in the past. Friends of Nicaragua School Project are some of the most wonderful and generous people:)

We seriously appreciate our donors and use 100% of the money for the children and teachers of our two schools in El Pantanal.

Thank you for helping in whatever way you can.

Kathryn, Andres, and Juan Carlos.

Take Spanish in Nicaragua!

A really wonderful way to travel is to spend some time in a country learning a language. This project was born from my desire to learn Spanish and also experience living in another culture.

My intercultural and language skills evolved each day I spent in Nicaragua; I was learning how to live my life in another country. The mere lesson of living and breathing another culture gave me the needed skills to run this small project (which has been around for 3 years...) Getting to know the people through my (sometimes) poor attempts at speaking their language created the bridge from my culture to theirs--I naturally (without intent) built the needed relationships to create a project that worked within the confines of Nicaragua.

It was never my goal to start a project like SI QUIERES or Nicaragua School Project Society but my goal of learning Spanish and choice to live in a Nicaraguan families' house gave me this opportunity. This type of travel is worth trying--it is bound to take most people out of their comfort zones. Feeling the differences of another culture can be the most amazing learning experience of all. I encourage people to pick a language--pick a country--and jet!

I recommend Granada, Nicaragua and taking your Spanish classes at Casa Xalteva: http://wwww.casaxalteva.org
The staff at Casa Xalteva is phenomenal. Beautiful, laughing, wise people... We often travel and never talk to the people around us--the bartendars, hotel staff, and taxi drivers... Taking Spanish classes will give you the opportunity to connect.

Feel free to email me if you have question about Casa Xalteva.

Education in Nicaragua

I sat on the porch with Olma, my Nicaraguan home stay momma, attempting to seek refuge from the sauna like atmosphere of the tin roofed house. My 14 year old Nica brother, Oscar, also joined us outside. We sat on the street in wooden rocking chairs. The conversation turned interesting.

Olma discussed education in Nicaragua. She told me something that I will never forget. She told me that the parents of children in Nicaragua have only one responsibility—that is to ensure that their children go to school. She believes that the reason why many kids don’t go to school is because their parents don’t enforce it; they quickly give up on their children after a few refusals or the ‘feet stuck in the mud’ syndrome.

Olma grew up extremely impoverished; she was raised by her mother who worked hard her whole life cleaning and cooking in nasty rich peoples’ houses. Although they struggled, Olma claims her mother made sure that her children attended school—whether clean, dirty, or hungry—they made it to school every day. Both her daughters graduated high school.

The conversation turned to Oscar, who isn’t Olma’s biological son but somewhat of an unofficial adopted son. Oscar can be lazy. Sometimes he doesn’t feel like going to school and struggles to get out of bed. Olma directed her comments at him—stressing that he had a choice—go to school and succeed or drop out and end up an uneducated casualty.

I had been teaching English to Oscar the past month and had noticed his desire to ask a lot of questions. Asking questions implies a level of interest and intelligence. I told Oscar that he was smart and has a lot of potential. My words hit his heart; I could see a slight flicker of a smirk. I hope Oscar chooses his path through education.

I think Olma is right. Kids need to go to school. Parents need to force them to go. School is free in Nicaragua (at the public schools.) Projects like ours—Nicaragua School Project— can break down other financial barriers for parents, since we purchase necessary school supplies for 600 children in El Pantanal. Let the mentality of education (seen in Olma) spread like wild fire across Nicaragua and throughout this beautiful world!!

Update: Feb 2011

Hello friends of Nicaragua School Project Society,

Just a quick hello to report of our successful progress here in Nicaragua--we have plentiful school supplies ready to be placed into the arms of curious children. Yesterday, we purchased a load of supplies and spent the afternoon creating packets of individual school supplies. Tomorrow, we will be making our way to our two schools.

If anyone has facebook and would like to join our facebook group--search Si Quieres, Pueden Reir. This is a good way to keep up to date with our progress, see new pictures, and videos. As well as our website is: www.nicaraguaschoolproject.org

I was lucky enough to meet a couple from england who work with people on garbage dumps in Cambodia; and now in Nicaragua--they loved our project and are featuring us in their upcoming documentary (in September.) The whole experience was enriching and challenging. I am also happy to report that I visited an amazing organization called 'El Shaddai' that works to house, clothe, and educate children from the street and desperate slums. Their work was truly inspiring. They started out small (just like our little project), and they now manage to support about 100,000 kids in India. Although it does seem like a tiny number in the scheme of India... their work is truly inspiring. I appreciated the friendliness of the staff, and we talked to many volunteers who firmly believed in the work of El Shaddai. You can have a look at their website: http://www.childrescue.net/about-el-shaddai-childrescue

El Shaddai is a Christian organization, but their philosophy is very liberal. They choose not to force religion on the children; they feel that religion should be chosen by the children later in life. I appreciate this philosophy greatly. If anyone you know is looking to volunteer in an english speaking country--India would be quite the experience! El Shaddai comes very recommended.

As one of the founders of Nicaragua School Project Society, I am happy to have had the experience of seeing how other projects in world are operating. I have YOU to -thank- for your dedicated donations and thoughts!:) I loved my time in India, but it also made me realize that Nicaragua is my home away from home, and that my commitment to the people and culture is even more important.

Kathryn:)

ATTN: VICTORIA residents

An exciting fundraiser for only $20.00

South American Tea Tasting fundraiser for the Nicaragua School Project Saturday July 24 4 pm – 4:45 pm$20 per person.

A variety of teas are popular throughout South America – from Yerba Maté, to thirst-quenching teas featuring herbs such as hibiscus and chamomile, along with black teas as well. In Nicaragua, a delicious drink known as Cacao is made by combining cocoa beans with sugar, rice, cinnamon and ice. Spend an enjoyable time exploring a variety of South American tea traditions as you taste a selection of delicious iced and hot teas, including a tea-inspired version of Nicaraguan Cacao! Be inspired by refreshing iced tea recipe ideas that are nutrient rich, and that you can learn how to make and enjoy at home throughout the summer. Nicaragua School Project was started in 2008 by Kathryn, a Canadian from Victoria, BC, and by Juan Carlos Roblero and José Andres Martinez (local Nicaraguans)—to effect change and foster hope for in-need communities. The benefits of the project are far reaching: while students gain access to essential supplies, the heavy burden of affording them is lifted for numerous families. Yearly, approximately 500 children receive school supplies and benefit from this Project. All of the supplies are purchased in Granada, Nicaragua with donated funds - www.nicaraguaschoolproject.org

Seating is limited – you must pre-register and pre-pay to attend. To register, call 250-704-2688 ext. 2, or email silkroad@silkoadtea.com. In order to gain more success, I would like to get charitable status; although, I am finding that it is not an easy task. I hope that one day, we too, can provide you with the tax exempt receipt.

I also want to remind you that August is rolling around the corner, and I will be needing some more donations in order to buy the two schools of kids school supplies. Over the week of February 2nd to 6th; we bought 1,400 american dollars worth of school supplies, organized them into individual packages, and delivered them to smiling faces. We are also happy to announce that we have taken on the responsibility of another rural school in the area of El Pantanal. This school has about 60 students and resides deep in the country---where very little outside intervention has gone. I have promised to keep them in our minds as we collect donations, and help these children in need as well. This year we were able to help 2 schools in EL Pantanal, Nicaragua----Jose De La Cruz Mena and introducing- Escuela Salomon De La Selva.
Unlike other organizations, our project works directly with the culture. I work with two local Nicaraguans to fulfill the needs of school children. All the donations that are collected in Canada are put into the Nicaraguan economy. We buy directly from a local school supply in Granada, Nicaragua called: La Gomper. Each child is personally given their school package (6 notebooks, pencils, pens, an eraser, and a pencil sharpener.) We enter classroom by classroom; we announce each childs’ name and hand it to them. We try to have a little bit of fun with them as well
Bonus Project*
This year, we paid for the education of a 14 year old girl, Hilce. I have known Hilce for about 3 years and she has always been a positive and friendly young girl. Last year, her father left her mother, and the family was left without money and abandoned. She also suffers from the emotional abuses of her alcoholic brother, who is in and out of jail. Hilce was forced to drop out of her private school and start going to a public school. She was faced with a long walk in the hard sun every day. Being disconnected from her friends was very difficult for Hilce. I heard about this situation and took a few days to decide to take on Hilce as a bonus project. We payed for her full year of private school. She is now back in her private school with her friends; safe and happy. I also bought her a pair of shoes. All of this only cost 300.00 US.She cried when I told her I would this for her, and so did I.
Thank-you for helping us with this project. Please help us continue to do what we do. Because if you can, they can laugh (Si Quieres, Pueden Reir.)
-Kathryn, Andres, and Juan Carlos.

Pictures:
#1 at top- Hilce
#2 at top- School boy from Jose de La Cruz Mena

January 2010 News

Well hello supporters,

Si Quieres (the Nicaragua school project) is turning 2 years old this February. So exciting. And in these last two years, we have:
-supplied 500 studens (3 times)
-Built six flush toilets
-supplied 15 children in Casa Xalteva with school supplies- 1 time
-Built a library for the school
-Donated 6 dry eraser boards (the modern blackboard) to the school
-Helped some neighbours in the area with essential groceries

All thanks to your generous support:)

2010 is exciting- I am heading to Nicaragua on January 17th- with a bank account full of donated cash (thanks for the donations at my dad's birthday!!) The kids in Jose De La Cruz Mena will be getting their school supplies this year.

The next big project will be: a covered basketball court at the school. I am planning to have this appraised while I am there. Donations are always welcomed and appreciated!!!! I would ideally hope to start this project in 2011. I would love to bring some joy and escape to these kids in El Pantanal; they struggle more than any of us could ever imagine. Please email me about this----- if you have suggestions or might want to volunteer to help:)

I am hoping to gain charitable status within the next 6 months, so that that I can give out receipts to all you fine people.

The website is coming along- I have been putting it off a little bit since I have been slammed with paper after paper in my MA program. However, I am hoping to have it up and running very soon. Thanks again to Alicia for donating the beautiful photos. And also to-Jacquie Troy, who is the genius behind the web site design. I will hopefully figure out how to connect a pay pal donation box to this website.

This project is evidence that a little dream can go so far--- Something so small that means so much to the kids & their families in El Pantanal, Nicaragua and also to: Kathryn, Andres, and Juan Carlos Roblero.

Rockin' for the Cause

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Qhidk_XfIUM/Su3VxQtvWxI/AAAAAAAAAIw/lk6uRWbulP8/s320/my+dad%27s+party+005.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5399206570564213522" />
On Saturday October 24th 2009, we had a very wonderful party for my Dad's 60th birthday. All our friends, family, and loved ones showed up to pay respect and have some fun! We also had a donation jar for the project: Nicaragua School Project Society. I am happy to report that we raised 2200 dollars for the project. Thank you so much for your generosity!! What an amazing night... Not to mention, my Uncle's band rocked the show!

Also, I have had some people ask me about whether or not I could give receipts in the future for donations. I am working on that right now! I will let you know and hopefully by 2010 (or sooner) I can make that charitable status possible.

Our website is being build as we speak.. Don't worry the blog will still be up and running for regular updates. This is pretty exciting. I am working with my friend Jacquie Troy on this endeavour. I used Western Union to wire down about 1000 canadian dollars (which is kind of a rip off, unfortunately.) I took it upon myself to make a $64.00 contribution to the project by paying for the Western Union charge of sending the money internationally myself. Within seconds, Juan Carlos was able to pick up the money. He already had 200.00 US in Nicaragua (long story...) but, he currently has about 1100US plus some left over supplies from February 2009 to make the project a success this August 2009.

I really wish I was there to help. If there is anyone in Nicaragua or Casa Xalteva that reads this blog, please feel free to help with the purchase, creation of packages, and delivery by talking to either Juan Carlos or Andres at Casa Xalteva. Well it is about to happen.

Here is the lowdown: I saved a chunk of donations to be able to supply the kids for a second time this year. I am going to be sending money down to Juan Carlos so that he can take care of bussiness. I have no doubts in my mind that he will take on the project with grace without my help (who needs that silly gringa anyways?) We should be able to supply each child in Jose de La Cruz Mena once again. Juan Carlos will be taking photos, so I will hopefully be able to post some updated photos from the project. I might get teary eyed, knowing I wasn't able to help this time! My project (my baby) is growing up and isn't needing me as much anymore.. hehe.

So, keep in mind that the new goal is to supply these children twice a year. If we make more money, we will create new projects, possibly help more schools.. So I highly encourage people to donate to us this upcoming year and before. I hope to be able to get back to Nicaragua for 2 weeks in February to supply the kids and possibly (hopefully) think up some new projects in the community.

Also, good news... I got into grad school at Royal Roads. I am taking a program called:MA in Professional Communication specializing in Intercultural and International communication. I know this is the right path for me because when I was asked by a career councelor what I generally wanted to do, I answered by saying... "working with people of different cultures". Im not 100% sure where this will take me, but I know that Royal Roads is a great school and I will be able to find out about all the possibilities out there. I believe that this project "Si Quieres..." is part of the reason I got in!

Also: because of Alicia of Studio Red Dot, who wrote me an amazing reference letter about our time shooting the documentary. She claims it will be done soon :) Im excited to see it and I will surely be blogging about it when it is all done and ready for viewers.

thanks.
A little project that has gone along way....

Kathryn
DALE PUES (that is what they would say in GRANADA)

NEVER ending need in Nicaragua!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Qhidk_XfIUM/Sjxdfi8TrDI/AAAAAAAAAH4/5d76I8mUAVk/s320/Nicaragua+2009+017.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5349253253946387506" />
I have been getting lots of emails and facebook messages asking me about what kind of volunteer opportunities there are in the Granada area. They are simply endless! I highly encourage people to try out volunteering, there are so many great options for everyone. Try Casa Xalteva: they are always needing volunteer english teachers, as well as volunteers to work helping young children with homework. Donna Tabor is also a great volunteer resource in Granada, Nicaragua. She is the founder of "Building New Hope" and she can hook you up with a great volunteer job. Both these organizations are listed under LINKS on my blog page!

Don't forget that money donations are always a great way to help, if you can't make it down south. We are always collecting donations for our project, "SI QUIERES, PUEDEN REIR." We will be supplying our wee ones twice a year now. Which is a pretty hardy goal.

Thank you for your continued support. We hope to keep our project going even during really tough economic times. "Casa Xalteva es una isla de amor en el mundo y tu la has hecho crecer." (Casa Xalteva is a island of love in the world and you have helped it grow.)

This project, "Si Quieres, Pueden Reir" all started because of a beautiful NGO in Granada called Casa Xalteva. If you haven't checked out the website, I would highly suggest doing so. http://www.casaxalteva.com Casa Xalteva offers spanish classes to foreigners and lots of volunteer opportunities. But, the best thing about Casa Xalteva is the 15 smiling kids who attend it daily. These are kids from impoverished backgrounds that come to Casa Xalteva to get an education. They also feed, clothe, and take the kids on fun adventures. Nicaraguan kids are quite possibly the best in the world (but I guess, I am biased.) *Props to Ken Carpenter ( a prof from New Mexico) who made this vision a reality*

I originally came to Granada to learn some basic spanish and ended up falling in love with the city & the fabulous people. That is how our little project was born. On my second trip to Nicaragua, three friends by the names of Juan Carlos, Andres, and Kathryn started a project to help the kids in El Pantanal. This is why Juan Carlos wrote on my card, "that I had helped the island grow..."

We now like to think of our little project as a mini island that lives off the shores of Casa Xalteva..... and my dream is that "Si Quieres.." could become bigger and help more children in Nicaragua someday.

I would now like to put my thoughts on paper (or type my thoughts on a computer screen?) This next year- I would like to:
1) Make "Si Quieres, Pueden Reir" a registered charity or NGO
2) Build a real web site for the project
3) supply the kids both in August and in February with school supplies.
*If you can help me with any of these three goals, please write me... I love hearing from you!

And if you haven't already... Please watch the 4 minute movie that I made with my friend Kay from Seattle..It's a nice little introduction to our project and El Pantanal. It's a beauty. Let's hope it grows...

dale pues, Kathryn

Yes, I am still in Nicaragua!

I realize that it has been awhile since I have posted on my blog about the project! Things are just about a wrap until August.

Here is a point form recap!

1. All the children now have school supplies (about 500 of those glorious children)
2. We went back to the school and collected new lists of the students who were new to Jose De La Cruz Mena and supplied those new children with a package. We will double check this before I leave the country and supply any children who didn´t receive or are new.
3. With the rest of the money I have currently saved for this project, we will supply the children with a second set of school supplies in August. Children in Nicaragua go through two sets of school supplies per year (basically 12 notebooks in a year...) So I will be sending money to my trustworthy partner in crime and he will collect willing volunteers to help him (as I will be in Canada, unfortunately.) Would you like to help? Email me.
4. I have been finding children around the Granada area who need school supplies and have been independently giving them school supplies. So far, we have met 3 children who were in need and were able to help them out! It´s a good feeling.

I only have 2 more weeks!!!! The time went so fast, and I know that I wont be getting back to Nicaragua for awhile but I hope to be able to still make a difference. Thanks to you, I am able to have this project and improve the learning situation for many.

Soon to come a video interview about the project!!!!! (stay tuned)

thank you.

They laughed....

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Qhidk_XfIUM/SZG8ta7YcJI/AAAAAAAAAHA/UaSdOKRuRPw/s320/IMG_0067.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5301225724900307090" />

This picture says it all.
500 students with school supplies.
Now, he can do his job better.

With 1400 american dollars, we were able to buy a package of school supplies (6 notebooks, 3 pencils, 2 pencils, a pencil sharpener, and an eraser) for 500 students. Thanks to your kind donations: 500 children in Nicaragua can write, solve math problems, and practice their cursive writing.

on Thursday February 8th 2009, we delivered the gift of school supplies to our school, (JOSE DE LA CRUZ MENA.) We arrived at 10am for the morning classes and then we returned again at 3pm, to deliver the packages to the afternoon classes. It was a tiring day, working in the wind storm that came our way, and we returned to Granada covered in dust. We came back to Granada knowing that we had made many children laugh that day.

We also bought a huge array of art supplies and learning tools for the preschool class in the morning. These will help to encourage learning and creativity. The teachers of the school received a large amount of dry eraser pens that are necessary to their jobs.

I really hope the kids take advantage of what they have been given. Juan Carlos told me that the main reason why children don´t attend classes in Nicaragua is because their parents can´t afford to buy the necessary school supplies. With projects like ours and others that are alike it, more children will be able to attend school appropriately.

With the rest of the money that I currently have and other donations that come in, we will continue to create projects to help the community of El Pantanal. I will keep everyone updated on the following events that take place.

and more exciting news......

1)At the beginning of January, my friend Kay from Seattle who has also studied at Casa Xalteva, filmed a short video of my project. It will be about 2 minutes long and I will be able to share it with those who read my blog. Thanks Kay!

2)We spent the last week (on top of everything else) filming a documentary with a couple from California named Alicia and Matt. They have a film company called: Studio Red Dot. Together we filmed a pilot that will eventually be aired on tv (hopefully?) You can check out their website at: www.studioreddot.com
I think that it is going to turn out beautiful & I can´t wait to relive the heartfelt comments & laughs that we had while filming. Thanks to them!

Please check out the photos from the documentary shoot on your right hand side under (important links.)All the photos were taken by the fabulous Alicia. I hope you enjoy the many colours of Nicaragua!

thanks!!!!
Kathryn (Andres y Juan tambien)

Greetings from CASA XALTEVA

I would like to let you all know that the school season is starting on February 3rd, 2009. Thank you for your kind donations, they are greatly needed this year for 2 big reasons.

1) The situation in EL PANTANAL is worse this year. The cost of plastic has split in half (50% reduction.) Since the major source of income for the people of El PANTANAL has been recycling, it has left many without jobs & even worse off economically. This information comes from the local paper.
My friend Andres´s stepfather has changed his career this year and is now selling instant coffee and white bread to people in Granada. He makes about 50 cordobas per day and has to feed a family of 8 people. (50 cordobas is about 2.50 american dollars.)I should also mention that it takes him about 8 hours of work to make this money.

2)The cost of everything has gone up in Nicaragua. For instance rice has gone up from last year: 9 cordobas for one pound and now it has gone up to (at the minimum) 13 cordobas for one pound. This sounds minimal to us, but to the Nicaraguan people, this is a huge increase. All of their staple foods: rice, beans, plantain, sugar, & oil, have gone up dramatically.
If a family in El Pantanal has a hard time buying it´s family food, then you can imagine the burden of buying their children school supplies.
Today in the paper LA PRENSA had an article called, IR A LA ESCUELA ES MAS CARO (going to school is more expensive.) For example: for 12 notebooks it can cost between 140 and 240 cordobas (ball park between 6 and 13 dollars.)This cost can be devasting for many children, who will end up without any writing materials. That is where we come in! Our main goal is to take the financial burden off the parents by supplying all 500 children in Jose De La Cruz Mena in El Pantanal with school supplies.

Education should be a right all over the world (and not a privelege), we hope to make that easier for this one community suffering greatly.

So thank you and thank you some more!

Kathryn.

The kids will be smiling!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Qhidk_XfIUM/SVc5tkhBh2I/AAAAAAAAAGw/1yECxxK-mzg/s320/Nica+2008+210.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5284756142801651554" />
Tommorrow, I will be flying all night long to get to Granada, Nicaragua. I will be back to my second home on Monday December 29th, 2008 around 10am. I hope to be greeted by some warm & loving faces.

I am also excited because my friend Andres will be getting married to his long time love, and I will be there at his side to see him give his nuptials in the church. He set the date of his wedding to the 29th of December, so I could be there. I will also be celebrating my 8 year old sister Judene's birthday with a pinata bday party jam packed with candy galore.

I have about 3500.00 now for this project, and I am thrilled by this. I will be working hard to make sure that all the kids in El Pantanal get a nice package of school supplies. With the extra money, I will create other projects. Please keep track of my project on this website.

Happy New Year to all!

Special thanks to Haven White, Brenda Knoop, a very kind anonymous donar, the Axemans, Kate McNamara, The Hadfields, The Jennings ladies, & everyone else that have donated recently. Your kindness is overwhelming.

PS the picture is one of my favorite pictures that I took while I was in Nicaragua last year. This little fella was hanging out in the school yard, and he couldn't have been more than 3. We have about 1600 dollars to work with now, and I am hoping that a few more angels will give the gift of education this year. Remember, I am in town for 3 more weeks so please contact me, if you would like to help as well!:)

Just a recap: I need to supply 500 children of El Pantanal, Nicaragua with school supplies & with any other money, we will create new small projects (perhaps healthy food deliveries?) If you read about Nicaragua, you will find out that malnutrion is a huge problem. Here is an article about Nicaragua on the Canadian RED CROSS website about Nicaragua. http://www.redcross.ca/article.asp?id=567&tid=040

Check it out! There is a job that was posted on the RED CROSS website for a project manager on one of their projects (In Managua, Nicaragua), and I just sat here and realized that it would be my dream job. Too bad, Im not qualified. But who knows, maybe someday? This dream has definetely exceeded all my expectations.

For now, this little project which seriously gives me extreme pleasure, is enough for this girl. It is really worth it when you see them smile.

Special thanks to David Pelland for his kind contribution, both this year & and the year before. It is nice to know that many people care about a country like Nicaragua, that really doesn't get much media attention.

Kathryn

1000 and counting...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 221px; height: 166px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Qhidk_XfIUM/SSM9Jf5-EkI/AAAAAAAAAGc/ljRc_QWhG9U/s320/Kath%26Oscarlito.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5270123222346371650" />
So it's been a little while since I have been back in old Canada land and I have managed to raise a few dollars to buy my kids in the school "Jose de La Cruz Mena" school supplies this coming year. A few of my Canadian friends joined me last Sunday for a small breakfast to raise money for my kids. We made about 125.00. The turn out wasn't fabulous but those of my friends who I can always count on, showed up with bells on! Thank you for caring. It turns out I can make a pretty mean breakfast.

The school year in Nicaragua commences at the beginning of February so I am hoping to have atleast 2500 dollars to make our dream a reality. So far we have about 1000 and I will continue to politely ask people if they would enjoy helping my cause! I always have to remind everyone that each of your hard earned dollars goes straight to the kids, we don't take a cent. I would like to be able to supply about 500 children with adequate school supplies which will take the economic burden off their parents. The sad truth is that most of these kids would go to school without anything at all. I want to to remind people that Nicaragua is considered to be the second poorest country to Haiti in the Americas. If you would like to read more about the situation in Nicaragua check out: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/country_profiles/1225218.stm?lid=nicaragua&lpos=day_txt_poorest-country

The picture I posted is one of my favorite kids in Nicaragua named Oscar. He has been apart of the program at the spanish school I attended "Casa Xalteva" for about 3 years now. Juan Carlos whom I share this project with, met him a few years back when he was looking for water to drink. Juan Carlos invited him to join the program at Casa Xalteva where he could receive free schooling, meals, and a warm place to put his head at night. Oscar comes from a loving home that just simply could not afford to take care of his important needs. Casa Xalteva really inspired me to help other kids in other communities such as El Pantanal, where the situation is even more dire. If you are interested in studying spanish abroad, I highly reccommend Casa Xalteva. They not only provide great instruction & great laughs, but also some of your money goes towards helping street boys. For more information check out their website at: http://www.casaxalteva.com/

I love Oscar even though he tries to convince me on a regular basis that I am a dirty gringa (that doesn't bathe.) We have a good laugh together.

Christmas is coming up and I hope that people think about how overboard we can all get with the consumerism. We have everything we need in our society...ipods, iphones, wees..etc. It's actually pretty sick. I hope you think about doing something a little bit more meaningful whether it is donating to a local charity or helping my kids in Nicaragua. As Gandhi put it..."Be the Change you Wish to See in the World." It's just that easy.

I am very inspired by other people who are helping out in other ways. My good and long term friend Tara fell in love with the community of Gulu in Uganda, Africa. She is now involved with her own project situated out of Montreal raising funds to provide basic health care to children. For information regarding this project please email me at: puedenreir@gmail.com.

I would also like to thank family friends who have kindly donated money to my cause. Thank you to Michelle Pelland & Jim + Linda Millala for your kind contributions.

Muchas Gracias.

Garage Sale in Victoria BC

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Qhidk_XfIUM/SLdfY1vtSuI/AAAAAAAAAGU/aQTCojxaqkY/s320/Nica+2008+312.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5239761571817540322" />
Garage Sale
Saturday September 6th 9am-5pm
for address details please email me at: puedenreir@gmail.com

To fundraise for our project “Si Quieres, Pueden Reir” (If you want, they can laugh!) I met Emily in Granada, Nicaragua and we were placed in the same spanish class for one week. That was by far one of the best weeks of spanish class, as we learned a lot but also spent quite a bit of time teaching our teacher slang and dirty words in english:) In that time, she learned about our project "Si Quieres, Pueden Reir". Emily and her husband Drew came out with Andres and I on one of our first ventures to El Pantanal and the school "Jose de la Cruz Mena". Drew and Emily also spared some precious travel money (as they still had 5 months more to travel around South America) to buy us some notebooks and supplies for the kids. Thus Emily truly witnessed the birth of our project and Im happy to say that she will also allow it to grow further. Emily's sister in law Jen Bowerman of San franciso wrote me to let me know how Emily had talked about our project in Nicaragua and that she wanted to donate money in Emily's name for her birthday. We graciously accept 100.00 American dollars in Emily Crandall's name to continue our project in El Pantanal, Nicaragua. I will be heading back to Granada, Nicaragua in early January just in time for the beginning of the school year and this money will be used to buy our 500 students their packages of school supplies. I want to thank Jen Bowerman and her husband for their kindness and as well as to Emily & her husband Drew for everything as well.:)

My friend Juan Carlos (who I stayed with & who works with me on the project) pointed out Emily's dimples when she smiled. Juan Carlos loves dimples because his 8 year old daughter Judene has an incredible pair. When Juan Carlos saw Emily for the first time in Casa Xalteva as she waited for our spanish class to start, he asked her in spanish "what class are those dimples going to". Of course we didn't understand what he meant at the time but he explained (as he always does...)

Happy Birthday Emily. I hope you are smiling today. Ojala que estes sonriendo.:) Make sure to come to Victoria sometime to visit.

Toilets are done... now we need some cash!

Just writing a quick update to say that we have finished those ever famous toilets for the kids about 2 weeks ago. I am going to post some pictures of them when I can, as I am not in Nicaragua anymore... and I am relying on my friends in Granada to send me those. However, rest assured that the kids now have 6 flush toilets (for 1100 students) rather than 1 for 1100!!!! We feel good about it. And we hope you do too.

Now we are trying to raise some funds so that we can give our kids at Jose De La Cruz Mena a second round of school supplies. These kids will each receive a package of 6 notebooks, 2 pens, 1 pencil, an eraser, and a pencil sharpener. It costs about 5.00 to supply one child. Each child will get a package (no matter if the child is less poor than another) we feel that this part of Granada (El Pantanal) is generally economically struggling and do not pick and choose. Therefore, rest assured that these happy smiling faces will all be getting the same package.

If you can in anyway help with our project please email me.
puedenreir@gmail.com

Donate!! I now have a pay pal account & you can send me money that I will directly send to Nicaragua. Right now the money will go towards finishing our "toilet project" and then after that we will be raising money to resupply our kids in the school Jose De La Cruz Mena. We will need about 4000 for that resupply project.

What you need to do is sign up for a free pay pal account https://www.paypal.com and after that is done send whatever amount you feel compelled to send to my email address which is yourfriendkathryn@gmail.com
I know that I am not an NGO as of yet but you can be assured that the money goes straight to the source and that I don't take a dime of your hard earned cash. Casa Xalteva is a non profit spanish school and educational center in the heart of Granada, Nicaragua which raises funds to help care for children that come from harsh economic conditions. "Si Quieres, Pueden Reir" is a project inspired by the philosophy of Casa Xalteva which is to help others that are in need without religious or personal biases. http://www.casaxalteva.com

Our project was founded by three people from Casa Xalteva. Our project consists of one former student from Canada (Kathryn Moncur) and two local Nicaraguans who are important staff members at Casa Xalteva (Jose Andres Martinez Barahona and Juan Carlos Roblero.) Through generous foreign donations and money raising projects, we will continue to help the school "Jose De La Cruz Mena" in El Pantanal (Granada, Nicaragua.) Our main goal is to be able to supply each student of this school with a package of school supplies twice yearly. This is to ensure that the children have the proper supplies for optimal learning.

We also discuss and create other projects within the school in order to improve the conditions for not only the students but the teachers who are working in the environment. We would like to continue to support this school within El Pantanal in order to encourage and motivate the children to stay in school.

As my friend Juan Carlos says… “It is all worth it when you see them laugh”

Toilets are almost done!!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Qhidk_XfIUM/SFAj78B4rYI/AAAAAAAAAEI/-tkIurK6pzk/s320/Nica+2008+355.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5210704281500953986" />
I am writing you from Canada ( I returned a week ago) to let you know that our 4 flush toilets that we are putting into the school are almost finished. We have also repaired the other two toilets that already existed. Therefore within weeks the children will be priveleged to use 5 flush toilets (instead of one) and the teacher's will continue to have their own personal toilet. I have received word from Nicaragua that we are lacking a little bit of money for the roofs and doors for the toilets. Therefore it is my hope that I can raise more money so that we can complete this project very soon.

As soon as I have updated pictures of the toilets, I will be posting them for your viewing purposes.

I want to thank Oliver Hartman once again for heading this project and making sure it went so well. Our team that we hired for this project worked hard in the rain and hot sun without the tools that we are spoiled with in Canada and the USA ( like tractors ect.) Everything was done by shovels and picks!! These guys are seriously strong and amazing workers. We are also lucky to have been given the gift of a discount because this project was to help a local school. We are very grateful for that.

Please let me know if you would be willing to donate to finishing this project. We have now discovered a way to send money to Nicaragua that doesn't cost money.

email me puedenreir@gmail.com

Update on Toilet Project!

We are happy to announce that we will begin construction of 4 flush toilets in the school on Monday May 19th. We will also be repairing 2 existing toilets at the school that for much time have been broken. We have sufficient funds at the moment but are still missing about 300.00 to complete the job. We hope that more generous donations will be made:)!

We have a construction/plumbing team that will working with us (discounted because this is a community project) as well as students and teachers that will be volunteering to help with the construction. Basically we will be digging holes (until it kills us or maybe just me....) This is going to be some REAL volunteer work.

We are very excited to begin this project because it will change the environment greatly at this school. I wrote before that the kids at the moment have 1 toilet for more that 900 students (I was mistaken on the number previously it is more like 1100 students for 1 toilet.) The unsanitary conditions of the toilet were witnessed by our team the day we visited and we have never been able to forget about it. Therefore, we hope to create a more sanitary and respectable environment for the kids who attend.

Thanks to those who have donated and especially to a student named Karine who managed to raise 1200 in her home town of Montreal to donate to our project. She as well will be helping dig holes with our team.

I would also like to especially thank Oliver Hartman who got the ball rolling on this project by making connections with the construction team. He also plans to work 8 hr days helping the construction team on site.... That is devotion! Therefore, it is my pleasure to invite Oliver to be apart of our project. This comes at a convenient time since I will be going home to Canada in less than 3 weeks and Oliver will be here in Granada for a year. Oliver will be able to help Andres and Juan Carlos continue to make positive changes for our original school project in "Jose de la Cruz Mena".

thank you Kathryn.

Helping the streets dogs

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Qhidk_XfIUM/SBupTK5WxJI/AAAAAAAAAEA/VXbwQsMqUWo/s320/dog.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5195932741909529746" />
I just wanted to post a quick blurb about the organization "Building New Hope" which is helping many streets dogs get off the street and find homes in Granada. I have recently taken on a secondary volunteer job helping with the dogs in the clinic and I am in love with the kindness of these people and what they are doing.

Basically they find dogs that are dying along the side of street (if you have been to a third world country you know what I am talking about) and bring these animals back to life. I got to witness the revival of a baby chihuahua that was left for dead on the side of the street and brought into the clinic. Within two days, she is a puppy, running around and loving on all of us.

Please take the time and check out Donna Tabor's website www.buildingnewhope.org and keep them in mind if you want to help the puppies or adopt a lovely street dog (which surprisingly make amazing pets... they are wise!)

The picture at the top is Porsha who is still looking for a home. She is missing an eye due to a severe infection caused by abuse. She has an amazing personality and is sooooo friendly.

thanks Kathryn.

The Toilets.

Right now our main focus is another school close by to our main project site "Jose de la Cruz Mena". The reason why we are now putting more focus on this other school called Escuela "Mercedes Mondagón" is because of the attocity that we all witnessed when we visted this other school. For a school of 900 children there are 2 toilets. However one toilet is locked and reserved for the teachers. Therefore, in reality there is one toilet for 900 children. I should also add that the toilet does not flush.

The situation is completely unsanitary. Once the toilet is full of human feces, the children begin to go on the floor and then they will venture behind the toilet and go on the dirt ground. Our concern is for the children and also for the woman who cleans up the toilet at the end of the day. Most of us couldn't bare the smell nor the sight. I felt sad that this is a reality for the children and feel that noone should have to go to the bathroom in these horrid conditions. I would also like to point out that the director of the school has written the government countless times and they have done nothing to improve her situation.

Our wish is that we can build either 6 flush toilets or 6 outhouses for this school. This requires about 4,000 dollars that we need to raise.

We do not try to go out of our way to find new projects outside of what we want to do (help and supply the kids in El Pantanal) but this situation is one that we cannot forget nor ignore. Please help us raise more money!!!!

Please send me suggestions as well. The goal was to get their hands dirty and to experience Nicaragua outside of the tranquility of Granada. Our 3 projects included painting a murale, planting trees, and collecting garbage along the edges of the school. For the most part, the projects went smoothly and the teenagers got to know the children of the school quite well. Unfortunately, a crazy Spaniard named Nas started a paint fight and everyone ended up covered from head to toe. Luckily for everyone, the paint came off our skin and clothes easily.
The project with the trees will also provide volunteer opportunities for the students in Casa Xalteva. We will be needing students to visit the school and look after the trees. Watering and care projects will soon be implemented. As for now, the director of the school is in charge of making sure that the trees are watered.
The best part of the day was seeing all the children having fun with the "gringitos". So far we have been quite successful in making the children of the school laugh.. as we have wanted to (Si Quieres, Pueden Reir.)

Pictures from the volunteer day with the teens from San Francisco

<img style="display:block; We need dry eraser pens for the new acrylic white boards that we donated to the school. We have donated about 12, but we need to continue to donate the pens to the school as they dry out quite fast. Here is the address to Casa Xalteva if you are at all interested in this opportunity.

Casa Xalteva
Calle Real Xalteva #103
Igl. Xalteva 1/2 al Norte
Granada, Nicaragua
Please address your package with the name Juan Carlos Roblero and Si Quieres, Pueden Reir.

We are still working on a good way for foreign donations that does not require a lot of time or hassle. However, money is continually needed as our next big project requires a fairly large amount of money. We are hoping to build a few toilets for another school close by to "Jose de la Cruz Mena". The situation is very horrifying as there are 900 students and one toilet that does not work. Therefore, the conditions are EXTREMELY unsanitary and unsafe for the children. I will be posting more information on this topic soon. But for now, I would love to have feeback about ways to promote foreign donations and ways to send money to a country like Nicaragua.
please email me at puedenreir@gmail.com

thanks!

We Care About the Kids in El Pantanal

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Qhidk_XfIUM/SAJlY09KynI/AAAAAAAAACg/Vg6oKtDRSB8/s320/DSC08620.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5188821197890701938" />
Jose De La Cruz Mena is becoming a more adequate environment for the Children of El Pantanal. On Friday, we delivered the school 2 brand new beautifully handcrafted wooden book shelves. The director of the school had made it clear to us that his biggest desire was to have a place to put all the books that had been donated to the school. So the director was extremely appreciative of the donation and requested that we place a plack on the book shelves with the name of our project "Si Quieres, Pueden Reir". This is so that the students of the school remember that our project has helped their school tremendously. We will of course follow through with this request.

This Tuesday, we will be returning to the school with a group of 30 students to do some serious volunteer work. Our plan for that day is as follows- 1 group will be planting trees around the edge of the fence to promote shade for the students. We will be buying trees that do not require a lot of water and thrive in the tropical conditions of Nicaragua. The second group will be collecting garbage in El Pantanal with a group of designated students from the school "Jose de la Cruz Mena". This is a great learning experience for the students from the USA because they will get to see how people in El Pantanal are living and will have a chance to improve the environmental conditions. It is also important for the Nicaraguan students, as there is a severe problem or lack of consciouness towards the physical environment. This beautiful country is ridden with garbage because of the simple act of littering pretty much everything. We hope to promote the simple task of placing garbage in the correct place (not in the streets, trees, gutters, ditches ect.) Our third project is going to be a murale that both our American students and Nica students will be doing together. The murale will be placed on an obvious wall in the school, so that the kids in El Pantanal can remember this day. I will be writing about this day, after it occurs, and I will be positing many pictures!

I also want to especially thank a fellow named Karsten from Denmark who not only donated a very generous amount to us but encouraged his friends at home to donate. Thank you so much for your kindness and generosity. His passion to help others is extremely obvious and we all think very highly of him. Que te vaya bien.

Que tengan un buen dia.
Kathryn, Andres, y J.C.

More Exciting NEWS!!!!!!~

We are extremely proud to tell you that we have completely finished supplying all the children in the school "Jose De La Cruz Mena" with school supplies (both the morning and afternoon classes.) As well as, we gave the preschool class a large package of colored paper, felt pens, glue, scissors, and other kinds of materials that are useful for art projects.

We also donated 6 brand new dry eraser boards to the school. This was one of the best moments for us, as the appreciation from the teachers was intense. One of the teachers almost cried as we presented her with a brand new "black board" for her classroom. This is a very special donation because the blackboards that the teachers were previously using were those that require chalk. Chalk is considered a health risk that can cause lung problems and conditions like asthma. Thus, we have improved the working conditions for the teachers greatly and it makes us feel very satisfied! THANKS TO YOU!!!

What is next? We have payed for 2 book shelves that will fit 300+ books. They are currently being built and we will deliver them to the school as soon as it's possible.

This week and the following week we have a group of 30 students from a highschool in San Franciso (French American International High School) studying spanish at Casa Xalteva and tonight we will be giving a presentation about our project! We will be presenting them with our goals and what they can do to help us. Our hope is to have a day where we can all go to El Pantanal to plant trees in the school yard in order to create needed shade.

Thank you for continuing to check the updates on our site.

Gracias por todo.
Kathryn, Andres, y Juan Carlos.

Another delivery and More to Come!

On Wednesday of this past week, we finished delivering packages to all the afternoon students. FYI: the packages consist of 6 notebooks, 2 pens, 1 pencil, an eraser, and a sharpener. Then on Thursday, we went to visit the morning students and bring them their packages. It became apparent that many students who were in need of school supplies, did not receive anything. So we got the teachers to write out all the names of the students who didn't receive a package and promised to return the next week to finish off the delivery. The next day (Friday) we bought all the supplies for all the students in the morning classes and on Wednesday of this week, we will be finishing off our delivery of school supplies. It is satisfying knowing that all the students will soon have all the proper school supplies to properly take advantage of their education.

Another exciting update is that we have ordered and payed for 6 large white boards (pizarras)for the classrooms. They will be ready for us on Tuesday and we will be able to bring the teachers brand new white boards for their classrooms, as well as new dry eraser markers. This donation is not only going to make the lives of the teachers easier but going to improve the learning process of the students.

It is because of all your kind donations that we have been able to make all this possible for the school and the students that attend. Andres was apart of Casa Xalteva's educational shelter program which was founded by Dr.Ken Carpenter and Dr.Gregory Calvert in 1995. Before the age of 9, Andres worked daily collecting garbage with his older brother (without shoes) until he had the opportunity to come and live at Casa Xalteva.

El Pantanal is located outside of Granada and is considered by most as the garbage dump or "chureca". 80% of the people in El Pantanal work 12 hour days looking for plastic, metal, and copper in the garbage dump. For one pound of Copper or Iron collected it is possible to earn 7 cordobas. Plastic and other types of metal are usually about 1 cordoba per pound. For your information... the exchange rate between the cordoba and the american dollar is 19 for one american dollar. Both Andres' step father and brother continue to work in this field daily, and continue to suffer economically.

Andres is currently 22 and his education continues being sponsored by Casa Xalteva. He also works as Casa Xalteva's "Tour Guide" for student afternoon excursions . He does a great job taking students to spots off the beaten path and always has them laughing out loud. He is currently finishing his last year of school before he enters university.

It is both Andres' hope and our desire that we can help the children of El Pantanal. We hope that our efforts can enable the children to maintain a meaningful education.

<!-- D(["mb","18.75 for one dollar american. When we visited Andres's family yesterday his father and brother had worked for 3 days strait from 6am to 4pm without stopping to eat and made 140 cordobas. 140 Cordobas is like 7.00 give or take. It should also be noted that this 7 dollars is to provide for a family of 10 people. Andres's story is interesting because he is the product of Casa Xalteva. He came to Casa Xalteva to live with his brother at the age of 9 years old. Before that he and his brother were working in the family bussiness collecting as much scrap metal and plastic as possible. Thus Andres is priveleged in that he was able to receive an education and that his loving family could feel content that he wouldn't continue in the family career.

After learning about his story and thinking about the children in this town... an idea was born. When my idea came to surface I went strait to the source and talked to my friend Andres. After a small conversation, we decided to create our own project to help the kids in Posintepe. There are so many paths to take when forming a humanitarian project but we decided to go strait to the school in Posintepe and find out what it is we can do to help the kids stay in school and also get more kids into the school. Yesterday we went to the school and asked the teachers and students what they need. The teachers are writing out lists of individual students who are more in need of help than others and we also hope to buy items that are lacking in the school. For example there were no working lights in the school. Another goal we have is to help put students into the school who are not going for a reason such as "they dont have shoes or a uniform". We asked the kids in the school if they had brothers or sisters who were not attending the school because of an economic reason and about 10 out of 30 children raised their hands. The Sandinista Government headed by yours truly Daniel Ortega has made promises to the parents of Nicaragua to provide charity to students whose parents cannot afford simple items like backpacks, notebooks, pens, ect... but this promise has not been met... In Nicaragua, buying all the necessities for school is a burden economically for almost all families including the one I live in. Juan Carlos says that Daniel Ortega is a whole lot of blah blah blah (who knew blah blah transferred perfectly from spanish to english.) "Si Quieres, Pueden Reir" is a project inspired by the philosophy of Casa Xalteva which is to help others that are in need without religious or personal biases.

Our project was founded by three people from Casa Xalteva. Our organization consists of one student from Canada (Kathryn Moncur) and two local Nicaraguans who are important staff members at Casa Xalteva (Jose Andres Martinez Barahona and Juan Carlos Roblero.) Through our work and the help of other generous staff members and students, we are devoted to help the school "Jose De La Cruz Mena" by raising funds, collecting materials, and creating excursions to the school and town. Another goal is to educate students about the reality of poverty and the possible solutions that create hope.
